A Message From the Director

I have always been fascinated by sign language and Deaf culture. There was something both magnetic and enchanting about them. I immersed myself in films and books about Deaf's world. When I finally began studying Bulgarian Sign Language, I discovered the true value of communication and the creativity involved in building bridges between us. It is our inherent nature to be social beings. At the same time…

"The greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished."

This quote by George Bernard Shaw resonated with me as the initial ideas for this film began to take shape. We often take communication for granted but it is far from simple. It requires continuous, tireless, and mutual effort.

How many people truly understand the art of conversation? Perhaps very few. I wonder how often we genuinely connect with others and feel truly heard. And more importantly, how often do we listen and make an effort to understand others?

"We are individuals who seek access to diverse opportunities, films, and cultures.  We share the same goals and dreams as hearing people and we simply experience the world differently. In the future, it is essential that this is more clearly communicated so that we are recognized and valued for who we are."

Gabriela Spasova (Gabi)

"I appreciate how the film presents a crucial topic - the perspective of Deaf individuals - in a light, unpretentious, and humorous manner. Having experienced this firsthand, it will always stay with me. You can't truly convey something unless you deeply understand and feel it yourself."

Feature-Documentary Format

The students' research involved video interviews with real members of the Deaf community, who shared genuine stories from their lives.

Our aim with this film is not only to entertain but also to inform. To achieve this, we opted for a hybrid feature-documentary format. This unconventional choice, subtly integrated into the narrative, aligns closely with the storyline and is essential to the development of the Deaf character, Gabi.

The film can be seen as an exploration of human communication. The combination of these formats enhances the story's credibility, relevance, and authenticity, making its message both compelling and true to life.

"I believe that through sign language, we can make the world more accessible and understandable for everyone. Deaf people are not different - we simply don't hear. However, we have eyes that see and hands that help us communicate and connect in the world we all share."
